Molds can be made of different materials. However, what is most important is having a model to make a mold from. The model is the actual item to make a mold from to recreate it. If you do not have a model, one would need to be created by a modeler adding to the cost of creating the mold.
The cost of mold making can vary. Depending on the material used and how much workmanship goes into the creation of the mold. For instance, if you have a model you can provide to us and depending on the size the price can range from $100 to in the thousands. If you do not have a model the cost can be $500+. Remember, once you have a mold you can cast hundreds of items helping to recoup the cost on sales of an item.
Vacuum forming is a less expensive method of casting a mold. Plastic is heated up and formed around the item. Once cooled the item is removed and it is now a mold. Not everything can be vacuum formed. Items with undercuts cannot be vacuum formed. An undercut is part of a shape that once plastic is formed around the original model item can't be removed because the plastic formed around it. A brick can be vacuum formed while a full round item cannot. If you are not sure if your item has an undercut and want to see if it is eligible to be vacuum formed, just send us a picture. We will let you know.
